With age, the symptoms of back pain worsen, causing the hole at the center of each vertebra to gradually constricts, increasing the pressure on the spinal cord. In some cases, the pressure can get to a point where it affects mobility and nerve functions. The symptoms of back pain and motor skill problems may indicate that spinal cord damage has already occurred. Currently, the only answer is surgery. The surgery may relieve symptoms of back pain resulting from spinal cord pressure, but will not address the existing nerve damage. However, because of their surprising plasticity, nerves can heal. How can we help them do so and significantly alleviate the symptoms of back pain?

Spinal compression & symptoms of back pain in the elderly

Cervical spondylotic myelopathy, which involves spinal cord compression by the vertebrae, commonly affects individuals suffering from the symptoms of back pain resulting from degenerative diseases, such as osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Because the condition results in impaired communication between the brain and the body, compression can cause problems such as numbness, and pain or mobility issues when trying to use the limbs. Among individuals from 55, the most common type of walking impairment results from spinal compression. Surgery has so far been the answer to such condition.

A good sign for symptoms of back pain

In studies to address the nerve damage and symptoms of back pain caused by spinal compression, researchers have replicated the Classic Western Diet – high in fat and sugar- in rats, to study the role played by inflammation in the process. They also created two other rat test groups, all of them suffering from nerve damages and symptoms of back pain. One group simply received a classic rat diet while the other was given additional supplements of DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid, and curcumin, a substance found in the spice turmeric.

The condition of the rats in the Western diet deteriorated after only 3 weeks. The rats on the DHA diet, on the contrary, were showing improvements in mobility by only six weeks. When observed at a cellular level, all groups demonstrated levels of nerve damage that directly corresponded to their walking capacity.

Conclusion:

  • Take Omega 3 to reverse nerve damages and symptoms of back pain resulting from spinal compression.
  • Generally, Omega 3 helps in reducing inflammation in the body, which positively effects back pain problems.
  • Be proactive and prevent compression process by preventively straightening the spine before problems occur.
