Personally, I do not like the term anti-aging used by the cosmetic industry to promote their latest creams and numerous products. It is based on fear and denial of an obvious process and ultimately only makes you depressed about yourself so that you buy more.

So I have opted for the term pro-youth, which is really what it is about: MAINTAINING OUR POTENTIAL because our structure does not have to fall apart just as we get our head together.

Youth maintenance starts at a cellular level and omega 3 or Essential fatty Acid (EFA) plays a crucial role in cell maintenance.

Omega 3 oils influence the health and function of cell membranes by affecting the fluidity and permeability of the membranes and therefore influencing cellular health at a quite fundamental level.

They also act as precursor substances for a large group of chemical messenger substances within the tissues.

The main functions of omega 3:

  • Regulate oxygen and energy production: our cells’ most important moment-to-moment processes
  • Components of nerve cells
  • Structural components of membranes, they form a barrier that keeps foreign molecules, viruses, fungi and bacteria outside the cells
  • Keep hormone-producing glands active: crucial for the regular functioning of the endocrine system

The benefits of Omega 3 are just precious. They:

  • help transport cholesterol
  • help prevent the development of allergies
  • reduce inflammation
  • help depression
  • reduce arthritis
  • reduce the risk of developing heart disease
  • reduce the risk of strokes
  • lower blood cholesterol and triglycerides
  • lower high blood pressure
  • lessen skin disorders
  • help cure asthma
  • reduce macular degeneration
  • improve immune system
  • prevent neurological disorders (disturbance of behavior, learning disabilities, lack of coordination, abnormal sensations, visual impairment)

Yes you can get all these benefits in just one supplement? A little more about omega 3?

Essential fatty acids are only beneficial when they are consumed in the correct proportions to one another. In theory, we need twice as much Omega 6 as Omega 3. However, because of imbalances within Western diets, more Omega 3 should be consumed. The best bio-available form of Omega 3 are fish derived.

On average per person, only a third of a portion of oily fish is consumed each week in the UK. Actually, most of the population may be considered Omega 3 deficient.

It is highly advisable for adults, as for children, to take daily supplements of a good quality omega 3 supplements.

I do that every single day in the same way that others put creams on their face (I do that also!).

What is the best intake of supplement Omega 3?

KRILL OIL (from an Antarctic shrimp) has shot up to the number 1 position for supplying the crucially essential Omega-3 fatty acids. The outstanding superiority of Krill oil over any other source of Omega 3 may stand on the following:

  • Delivers Omega 3 without any fears about toxic contamination. This is due to the very low toxicity levels of the Antarctic Ocean
  • Minimal environmental impact: the harvesting of krill from the sea is at a very low level compared with the huge stocks available
  • Superior bio-efficiency (availability to the body) of the Krill Oil EPA & DHA since it contains significant amounts of fatty acids in the form of phospholipid, which is far more available to the body than the triglyceride form present in fish oil
  • Also provides a supremely powerful antioxidant that surpasses most other antioxidants in its far-reaching effects,
  • Smaller dosage: 1-2 capsules of 500 mg Krill Oil are recommended daily dosage.

Krill Oil has been demonstrated to give a substantially greater reduction of fat in the heart and liver than Omega 3 from fish oil.
Dr Plaskett B.A Ph.D., C.Chem

Krill Oil reduces the fat content in the heart by 42% while fish oil only reduced the fat content by 2%. The corresponding examination of the fat amount in the liver showed a reduction of 60% after administration of Krill Oil, while fish oil only reduced the fat content in the liver by 38%. This can lead to a reduced insulin sensitivity and contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes.

Why take Omega 3?

Let me give you a few examples in relation to the nervous system

Omega 3 and stress-related aggressiveness

41 healthy students under stress were supplemented with DHA (omega 3) or a placebo during 3 months prior to their exams. The students supplemented with the placebo displayed an increased hostility rate by 58% during the high stress period compared to the DHA supplemented group whose hostility did not change.

Depression and Omega 3

20 patients diagnosed as suffering from “major depressive disorder” completed a 4-week study during which they were supplemented with omega 3 or a placebo in addition to their anti-depressant medication. By week 3, significant improvements in depressive symptoms were found by the patients supplemented with omega 3
Nemets B et al (2002) ‘Addition of Omega 3 fatty acids to maintenance medication treatment for recurrent Unipolar Depressive Disorder’ Am J Psychiatry, 159, (3), pp.447-9.

Essential Fats and Developmental Co-ordination Disorders in Children

117 children diagnosed with Developmental Co-ordination Disorder were supplemented for 3 months with both Omega 3 & 6 or a placebo. During the three months, the supplemented children showed significant improvements in reading, spelling and behaviour compared to those supplemented with the placebo.
‘The oxford Durham study: a Randomised controlled trial of dietary supplementation with fatty acids in children with Developmental Co-ordination Disorder’ Pediatrics, 115, (5), pp. 1360-1366.

Endocrine system and inflammation

Prostaglandin series 2 (hormone-like substances) strongly increases inflammation and encourages blood clotting, processes absolutely necessary when the body suffers from a wound or an injury. Many diseases are associated with excessive inflammation and blood clotting (rheumatoid arthritis, strokes and heart attack). High level of prostaglandins has also been linked to health disorders such as diabetic nerve damage, high blood pressure, allergies and inflammatory skin conditions. Omega 3 block the detrimental effect of those Prostaglandin series 2.
