Back pain happens when there’s something wrong with the ligaments, muscles, bones or the joints that hold your back together. Strains, arthritis, hairline fractures, kidney infections or even stress can also be reasons for back pain. Pain that runs down from your lower back to your buttocks down to your leg causing cramps could be sciatica.
Natural lower back pain relief can be done through easy simple steps. Trial and error is the key as there no single cure for all kinds of back pain. A well rounded approach is recommended. Here are some suggestions, let us know which works best for you!
Ice works perfectly as a pain reliever and helps reduce swelling. Place an ice pack on the painful or swelling area for about 20 minutes. You can use a bag of frozen peas or corn wrapped in a towel as an alternative. Apply the ice pack as often as possible for the first few days of treatment. After 48 hours, change the treatment to heat compresses using a small heated towel or a towel dipped in very warm water, wrung out and flattened on the afflicted area. Cover with plastic wrap and put a heating pad set on medium over the plastic. Leave for 20 minutes, repeating 3-4 times a day for several days.
Stand straight balancing your weight evenly on your feet. Tilt your pelvis forward and backward exaggerating the movement to check which posture places the least stress on your back. Choose what is most comfortable for you. Focusing on an area at a time, “work your way up” your back; First, your waist area, chest and then your neck and shoulders. Maintain this position for standing, walking or when your begin and end an exercise.
60-70% of people with back pain also suffer from sleep disorders. Lack of sleep can also worsen back pain. This cycle should be addressed as one also goes with the other. Cut back on your coffee, eat the right kind of foods, get enough exercise or do relaxation techniques to have a good night’s rest. Try some natural sleep medications, such as Valeriane supplements, if you prefer.
In the morning, before you get out of bed, stretch your arms wide above your head. Pull your knees one at a time to your chest. Turn on your side and roll to the edge of the bed. Place your knees at the edge and push yourself up with one arm as your swing your feet down to the floor. Stand up and stretch your spine by putting your hands on your buttocks and leaning back slowly.
Stretch your hamstrings at least twice daily. Tight hamstrings give additional stress to your back and sacroiliac joint. The easiest way to stretch is by standing up, bending forward at the waist to reach your toes. You can also do this sitting down by placing your feet stretched out on another chair. Bend forward and reach your toes. This position gives less stress to your back.
A simple rub on the aching area will give you relief. Or you can ask someone to massage the area. You can use some massage creams or liniment but be careful as these sometimes can cause skin irritations. Try using some simple back massage aids like stuffing several tennis balls in a long sock and le your partner roll it on your back.
Reflexology is also great for back pain, especially sciatica. Applying pressure on the feet stimulates a relaxation response on your back. Try these out:
Consistency is the key. Apply several times a day as a natural lower back pain relief. You can combine this with stretchings and also apply some arnica to the afflicted area.
Lower back pain may be the consequence of a pinched nerve or herniated disc. In between our vertebra lie discs which acts as cushions. These discs are filled up with liquid and tend to get squeezed as the day pass by. They refill at night while we are resting lying that if we are well hydrated. Water may just be the easiest and cheapest natural lower back pain relief you may need.
