How often do you change your toothbrush? Is it once a month, or once in three months? The thing is there’s no exact schedule as to when you should change your toothbrush. The wear and tear of a toothbrush depends on the brusher. If your hands are heavy, then your toothbrush wears out faster than others. Nonetheless, the American Dental Association advices people to change their toothbrush regularly. Once the bristles of your toothbrush begin to spew in different direction, replace it.

But why should you care so much about your toothbrush? In case you aren’t very aware of, every used toothbrush is a breeding ground of germs. You see the mouth is a host to tons of bacteria like treponema denticola, streptococci, and staphylococci. When we brush using toothpaste, some bacteria from the mouth are left on the bristles. And many of us end our tooth brushing regimen by just rinsing the brush with tap water and leaving it to dry in the rack. This repeated habit allows germs and bacteria to multiply. Do you that a toothbrush have 10 million germs and bacteria in it?

Natural Way of Disinfecting Toothbrush

While you have an option to replace your toothbrush a few times a month, you surely wouldn’t want to buy a new one every day, do you? If your toothbrush is still in good shape, but you are worried about the bacteria and germs in it, you can just disinfect it. But no! Rinsing it or soaking the bristles into hot water will not do the trick.

Your secret disinfectant from the kitchen:

  • White Vinegar
  • Water
  • Baking soda (which is optional)

Note that both vinegar and baking soda are known disinfectant, which are also used in several natural cosmetic treatments. These two can are also great replacements to commercial household cleaners that are usually toxic.

Instructions on how to disinfect toothbrushes

  • Pour 120 ml or ½ cup of water into a glass.
  • Add 2 tbsps. of white vinegar and tsps. Of baking soda. Mix well.
  • Place your toothbrush upside down in the glass so the bristles are soaked in the mixture. Leave it for 30 min. and then rinse well.

You can disinfect your toothbrush at least 2 times a week.
