There sure are a wide variety of dietary supplements available in the market today – be it in supermarkets or in health stores. Dietary supplements are often used to address vitamin and mineral deficiency and or to supplement a particular diet to make it balanced. However, what many of us are unaware of is that there are tons of dietary supplements that can be used as a treatment for back pain.

Back pain can be caused by trauma due to an accident, muscle spasm, slip disc, poor posture and many other factors. Although most cases of back pain aren’t very serious, it nonetheless causes discomfort and can give an overall feeling of being unwell. While massage therapies can temporarily address back pains, seeking for a long-term and more sustainable treatment is necessary.

List of Dietary Supplements for Back Pain

The dosage and amount of supplements you take depend on your needs. However, taking dietary supplements on a daily basis is not encouraged. Still, it is best to consult a physician for proper administration of the supplements.

  • Vitamin D3 – this is a very popular yet affordable supplement for the back. It can reduce the pain and help boost the immune system.
  • Willow Bark – this is another popular supplement that can treat back pain, muscle pain and inflammation.
  • Cayenne – in Asian countries, cayenne is used to treat muscle ailments. It is used as a major ingredient in pain reliever plasters and topical cream to loosen muscles and treat back pain.
  • Turmeric – for many years now, Turmeric is used successfully as anti-inflammatory.
  • Devil’s Claw – this is a dietary supplement used to cure a huge number of physical problems like tendinitis and arthritis. By and large, it is an excellent medicine to lessen pain and inflammation.
  • Omega-3 – this usually comes in a form of capsules and is used for treating muscle inflammation.
  • Glucosamine – this one is an amazing supplement that is used to fight against lower back pain from arthritis. However, there are precautionary measures to consider when taking glucosamine as a supplement.

Tips in Taking Glucosamine

  • Before taking this supplement, compare its cost and benefits. Unlike other dietary supplements for back pain, glucosamine is a bit expensive, but may not be effective for everyone. Some supplements are cheaper, but less effective; some are effective, but have a few side-effects.
  • Our nutrition should be coming from the food we eat. Try eating a balanced diet before considering taking supplements.
  • Glucosamine is not a complete cure to back problems. It can only aid recovery.
  • This supplement, when taken, may cause side effects like heartburn, nausea, constipation and diarrhoea.
  • People that have allergy to shell, shellfish, lobster and crab cannot take Glucosamine sulphate supplements that are made from these ingredients.
  • Diabetic patients may not take glucosamine as early research suggests that this supplement can raise blood sugar levels.
  • Pregnant and lactating mothers should only take this supplement upon a doctor’s advice.
